The Advertised Price Is for a Business of One
Every field service platform advertises its most flattering number. Usually that's the cheapest plan, on annual billing, for exactly one user. If you run a crew, that number is not your price — it's the start of a calculation.
This article does the calculation for a three-person operation (an owner plus two field workers, everyone needing access to schedules, jobs, and time tracking) on the two platforms small service businesses evaluate most: Jobber and Housecall Pro.
Where these numbers come from: all competitor figures below were taken directly from getjobber.com/pricing and housecallpro.com/pricing as of July 2026, with the billing mode noted for each. Pricing changes — always confirm against the live pages before deciding. And a note on fairness: both are capable, mature products. This is an argument about pricing structure, not product quality.
Jobber for 3 People: The Math
Jobber's entry plan (Core) is a single-user plan — as of July 2026 it's offered only when you tell the pricing page you're a team of one, at $49/month with no commitment ($39/month on a 1-year commitment, $29/month billed annually). A crew can't live there.
For a team, you're on Connect or above, and Jobber prices by user count. Per its pricing page: "Add users for $29/mo each." For three people on Connect, month-to-month with no commitment, that means:
- Connect, 1 user: $139/month, plus 2 additional users × $29 = $197/month
- Or the Connect 5-user tier: $199/month — effectively the same money, with two empty seats
Committing reduces it: on annual billing the same three-person setup runs about $157/month (1 user at $99 + 2 × $29), or $149/month for the 5-user tier — paid up front for the year.
Need route optimization or automations? Those live on Grow, which starts at $199/month for one user (month-to-month) — the 5-user Grow tier is $299/month (also month-to-month). And the features you might assume are included can be add-ons: Jobber's pricing page lists Marketing Suite at $79/month, AI Receptionist at $29/month, and Sales Pipeline at $49/month on top of your plan.
Realistic three-person total on Jobber: roughly $150-$300/month depending on tier, billing commitment, and add-ons.
Housecall Pro for 3 People: The Math
Housecall Pro's structure (as of July 2026) is seat-gated tiers rather than a flat per-user fee:
- Basic — $79/month (monthly billing; $59/month on annual) — includes 1 user. Like Jobber Core, not a crew option.
- Essentials — $189/month (monthly; $149/month annual) — includes 5 users. This is where a 3-person crew lands.
- Max — $329/month (monthly; $299/month annual) — includes 8 users, with additional users at $35/month each.
So the jump from "me" to "me and my two guys" is $79 to $189 a month — the second and third people together effectively cost $110/month, a 2.4× increase over the advertised entry price. Housecall Pro also lists a catalog of add-ons (CSR AI, Pipeline, Payroll, Voice, Campaigns and more) without published prices, and its payment processing carries a 1% fee on bank payments with card rates starting at 2.59%.
Realistic three-person total on Housecall Pro: $189/month month-to-month (or $149/month billed annually), before add-ons and processing.
Why the Structure Matters More Than the Number
The specific dollars will drift — both companies adjust pricing regularly. The structure is the durable part, and it has two consequences for a small crew:
1. Your software bill is coupled to your headcount. On per-seat or seat-gated pricing, hiring your fourth person is also a software decision. That's exactly backwards at the stage where every hire is already a stretch — we've written more about why per-user pricing fits field service so poorly.
2. The advertised price anchors your budget $100+ low. If you budgeted off the entry-plan number you saw in an ad, the real quote at your headcount lands two to three times higher. That's not a discount conversation — it's the structure working as designed.
When you evaluate any platform (our buying guide has the full checklist), do the arithmetic at three sizes: your crew today, plus one hire, plus three. The spread between those three numbers tells you more than any feature grid.
The Same Crew on Flat Pricing
For comparison, FieldSpoke prices by plan, not by person. The Team plan is $49/month ($39/month billed annually) and includes up to 15 employees. The same three-person crew — and the fourth, fifth, and tenth hire after it — pays $49/month. The Business plan is $89/month with unlimited employees, and the rate you sign up at is locked: it never increases.
That's 3-4× less than the three-person totals above, with no add-on catalog — plans include their listed features. There's also a free plan (free forever, no credit card) if you'd rather prove it on real jobs before paying anything.
Do your own math for your own crew — on any platform, including ours. The point of this article isn't that one number beats another this month; it's that you should always price the software at the size of the business you're building, not the size of the pricing page's default toggle. For a deeper look at what a small crew actually needs from the software itself, see field service software for 2-5 person crews.
